What is Dermatitis?

Dermatitis covers an extremely large broad group or totally inclusive of all skin disorders as the word 'dermis' means skin' and 'itis' means 'inflammation'. Dermatitis symptoms would be any skin disorder that results in itching, redness, flaking, swelling, pain, stinging, burning, irritation, blistering, an allergic reaction, insect stings, drug reaction to oral medications resulting in redness or itching of the skin or topical medications that abrade the skin such as acne or rosacea exfoliates or steroids that results in irritated skin, etc. would be some of the primary symptoms that define dermatitis.

Long term types of Dermatitis that are discussed on this page are: Atopic Dermatitis, Contact Dermatitis, Stasis Dermatitis, Seborrheic Dermatitis and many sub-types of these.

Dermatitis is basically inflammation of the skin that is caused some contact or damage to the skin. So Dermatitis has become the catch all phrase for many rash like conditions such as: Scabies, poison ivy or oak, sumac, shingles, Herpes, ringworms, ebola fever and rash, and red eyes, bed bugs, etc. as the list can continue into the hundreds when inclusive of herpes, syphilis, gonorrhea, etc.
